J. Irvin Dally is an American singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, California.
J. Irvin Dally was raised in southern Illinois, eventually moving to Colorado and growing up in Spain. Dally eventually found himself in Sacramento and Santa Rosa before setting up more permanently in Los Angeles.
Self-taught and self-styled, Dally started out as a member of Sacramento band Brother before recording more experimental and expansive folk and pop music.
His cassette release, The Countryside of Southern Illinois and the Daydreams That Almost Got Me to 19 Years revealed an adventurous spirit early on through the focused course of a 26-minute song. His later Despistado EP was in turn described as "a collection of skeletal folk songs that range from light brushes over the strings with deft fingers to bombastic, sometimes jarring, arrangements that incorporate everything from primitive tape-loop drones to sputtering electronic percussion". His first studio recordings took form in the release of the vinyl 7" / digital release Sun Room / Teething and was released on January 11, 2011 along with a video directed by his Emmy Award winning brother-in-law Steve Lamme.
J. Irvin Dally made his SXSW debut in March 2011.
J. Irvin Dally has been compared to Jeff Buckley, Cat Power, and Sun Kil Moon.
